Travel photography Bahia Brazil

Barra Grande, Bahia | Brazil

Our time in Bahia was always hot and mostly rainy… that tropical kind of rain that comes suddenly, drenches everything and then disappears as fast at it arrived, leaving everything to steam dry in the sun. We left Itacaré and headed north on the Peninsula de Marau, destination: Barra Grande. The road is dirt and was in pretty good condition as we started, but after about 10 km it got worse and worse… combined with the rain and speeding devil-trucks it wasn´t long before we were driving on a slippery potholed excuse for a road. You know those National Geographic documentaries that…

Travel photography Itacare Bahia Brazil

Itacaré, Bahia | Brazil

Towards the end of last year we had the opportunity to travel to Brazil for work and decided to make a road-trip of it. The work part was just a few days but we booked 2 weeks, hired a car and hit the road in the state of Bahia… starting off in Ilheus and ending up in the capital, Salvador de Bahia. This experience was, in a word, life-changing. Well technically, that was two words… and it all sounds really dramatic, like I´m not the same person I was before I left, but I feel like we learnt so much and…

travel photography tavira algarve

Tavira | Algarve

Tavira is another little gem in the Algarve region that, while it´s still a lot more touristy than the Ilha do Farol, it certainly isn´t over-run with the drunk, obnoxious type of tourist… or at least, it wasn´t when we were there (thankfully!) The whitewashed walls and splashes of colour are reminiscent of the Greek isles, although the ubiquitous patterned tiles make it unmistakably Portuguese. As with many of our explorations around Portugal, we were travelling more for work than holidays so this little town left us lots to discover next time, when we aren´t on a tight schedule…

Ilha do Farol Algarve Portugal

Ilha do Farol | Algarve

The Ilha do Farol is probably one of my favourite places in the Algarve, at least from what I´ve seen so far. This southern stretch of Portugal has unfortunately (but quite deservedly) made a bit of a reputation for itself as being cheap, trashy and full of drunk Brits on holidays… you don´t need to spend more than 5 minutes in Albufeira to know what I´m talking about. (Quick tip… don´t ever, ever go to Albufeira.) But the Ilha do Farol is none of these things… this long thin island off the coast of Olhão is only accessible by boat…

Be Aromatic

In the autumn of 2014 we spent a few days out in the Alentejo documenting the workings of an organic herb farm for our friends at “Be Aromatic“, who specialise in growing herbs for the essential oil industry. This is a relatively new business and they needed their website to have a cohesive set of images to illustrate who they are and what they do… without being too corporate or industrial about it. Theirs is a family-run production and they have a strong connection to the earth, this is their business but it´s also their life philosophy… they live on…

travel photography Cudillero Asturias Spain

Cudillero | Spain

On our last day in the Asturias region of Spain we left our lovely Airbnb and slowly meandered our way along the coast in the direction of the airport for our afternoon flight back home to Lisbon.  The sunny weather abandoned us as we drove and by the time we arrived in Cudillero it was gently raining… but we couldn´t really be upset as we´d has so many days of sunshine which is really rare here. We had “Fabada” for lunch, a bean and cured pork type of stew which is very salty, smokey and incredibly filling. We have since…

travel photography Luarca Asturias Spain

Luarca | Spain

Another town we visited during our Spanish mini-roadtrip was Luarca… a very picturesque fishing village on the north coast of Spain, in the Asturias region. We had such great luck with the weather this time around, if you´ve been following the blog for a while you may remember that we went camping in the Asturias and Basque Country in the summer of 2013 and it rained almost every day… so we were very happy to finally see this landscape in the sun! The fact that we weren´t staying in a tent was also a relief.

travel photography asturias spain

Oviedo | Spain

Our first stop on our Asturian trip last summer was the small city of Oviedo. As usual, we gravitate towards the food markets… it´s like a built-in compass that we have, impossible to avoid. So it didn´t take us long to find Oviedo´s Mercado, which is where we spent most of our time (and our money). The Asturians are very much into super-stinky blue cheese and cured meats… loads of cured meats. This is not a vegetarian friendly destination, but lucky for us we´re not (vegetarians) and a fair amount of our returning luggage was filled with jamon.

Travel photography Asturias Spain

Asturias | Spain

Last August we flew out to the north coast of Spain to photograph the wedding of an old school friend of mine (you can see it HERE). We have learnt from experience that when you´re travelling for work you don´t get to see much of the place you´re visiting unless you book a few extra days… and this is how we got to spend a few days exploring the Costa Verde in the Asturias region of Spain. This is the first of several posts as I photographed a lot and had to split it up, otherwise you would all be…

Food and Home Entertaining – November 2014

In November 2014 an article that I both wrote and photographed was published in Food and Home Entertaining, South Africa´s leading food magazine. As a South African living in Portugal it was quite cool to work on this story, it was great to be able to promote Portugal in my home country. This was also a challenge because it´s the first time I´ve written as well as photographed for a magazine… and hopefully it´s something I´ll be able to do again. I tried to focus on lesser-known places in Portugal… everyone knows about Lisbon and the Algarve but Portugal has…
