Rome Markets | Italy

On our recent trip to Rome we planned to do more of a foodie trip, rather than a “monuments and museums” kind of holiday… so I did a bit of research beforehand (and created an entire Pinterest board with ideas and recommendations from friends) to find the best local markets. As it turns out, the research wasn’t all that necessary because there are farmer’s markets just about everywhere in the city, we stumbled across many just while wandering the streets, particularly in the neighbourhoods just outside of the “tourist zone”… Trastevere, Pigneto etc. There is also a lovely market right in the middle of the historic district in the Campo de Fiore, which is beautiful, but expensive… great for photos, not so great value for money. But our favourite was the International Market, locally known as the Mercato di Piazza Vittorio which is about a 10 minute walk from the Termini train station. They had loads of fresh Italian produce as well as products from all over the world… a huge array of African and Asian spices and condiments that would be difficult to find in the average Italian supermarket. Also the best prices we saw for cheese… if your plan is to buy heaps of pecorino or parmigiano, then this is the place to do it.

  4. Wonderful! I love the vibrancy and life of the local markets. I recently took similar shots while in Nice, France – I loved every minute of it!

  5. Gorgeous photos! I’m a big foodie as well (and beginning photographer), and am currently studying abroad in Florence; however, I am definitely planning on making a trip to Rome on the weekends! For some reason, I hadn’t even thought about farmer’s markets, but I would love to visit one! 🙂 Thanks for the recommendations!

    1. My mom lived in Florence many years ago and said that she found loads of farmers markets there too, so be sure to ask around… you may not even need to go as far as Rome!
