Travel Photography West Coast South Africa

Paternoster, West Coast | South Africa

Paternoster is a small fishing village on the west coast of South Africa and even though it´s in the same country as the Transkei coast in the Eastern Cape, it could´t be more different if it tried. Some 1500km´s of coastline separate the two… the distance is so great that they don´t even share the same ocean and instead of rolling green lawns there are rolling white sand dunes. Paternoster is on the icy Atlantic ocean and though the sea is clear blue and it looks like you´re in Greece, the water is cold enough to take your breath away…

Mdumbi Beach Transkei

Mdumbi Beach, Transkei | South Africa

During our most recent visit to South Africa, we flew into Joburg and drove down to Cape Town via the coast. During this road trip we spent a bit of time on the Transkei coast, in the Eastern Cape, and my mind was absolutely blown by how amazing this part of the country is. It was my first time here but certainly won´t be the last. The landscape here is so incredible…colourful, round Xhosa huts scattered across rolling green hills covered in the most incredibly manicured lawns, I could just imagine hordes of British garden enthusiasts going nuts over the impeccable…

van life road trip portugal

Van Life | Costa Vicentina

Last autumn, right before we jumped on a plane to Brazil, we hired a camper van and did a little road trip down the Costa Vicentina, the south west coast of Portugal… half in the Alentejo and half in the Algarve, this coastline is without a doubt one of my favourite parts of Portugal. The campervan is all part of a bigger plan that we have, to take some time off work and travel around Europe… it´s all still a work in progress and I´ll tell you more about it once we have a more definite idea of when and…

Peneda Geres National Park | Portugal

In March this year, towards the end of winter, we took a drive up north to spend some time with friends and explore a part of Portugal we don´t know very well… the Minho region, more specifically, the Peneda Geres National Park. We spent the weekend at Sobrenatura in the tiny town of Gração, just outside of the national park and spent our time hiking and eating and drinking and sitting in front of the fireplace and eating a bit more… The food here is incredible and when you travel with Portuguese people, you know that you´re going to be eating…

Travel photography Salvador da Bahia Brazil

Salvador da Bahia | Brazil

The last stop on our Bahian roadtrip was the capital city, Salvador da Bahia… we took the ferry boat across from Itaparica and spent 3 days in the city. Salvador had been on my wish list for a very long time and it´s always a bit of a strange experience finally arriving in a place that you´ve dreamed so long of visiting. Of course, it´s never the same as you dreamt it, these things never happen when or how you expect them to… I had envisioned a smaller city, not so busy and certainly hadn´t expected to see as many tourists….

Boipeba Island Bahia Brazil

Boipeba Island, Bahia | Brazil

Boipeba island was definitely the highlight of our trip and I could have easily stayed here a week or more. In the end we did stay longer than planned and cut Morro de São Paulo out of our itinerary which I think was one of the best last-minute decisions we made. This island is incredible, it feels as though you´ve stepped back in time… there are no cars, only horses and donkey carts. The town is small and everything is within walking distance. Kids and dogs roam free in the streets, safe from speeding traffic (because there isn´t any). The beaches…

Travel photography Bahia Brazil

Barra Grande, Bahia | Brazil

Our time in Bahia was always hot and mostly rainy… that tropical kind of rain that comes suddenly, drenches everything and then disappears as fast at it arrived, leaving everything to steam dry in the sun. We left Itacaré and headed north on the Peninsula de Marau, destination: Barra Grande. The road is dirt and was in pretty good condition as we started, but after about 10 km it got worse and worse… combined with the rain and speeding devil-trucks it wasn´t long before we were driving on a slippery potholed excuse for a road. You know those National Geographic documentaries that…

Travel photography Itacare Bahia Brazil

Itacaré, Bahia | Brazil

Towards the end of last year we had the opportunity to travel to Brazil for work and decided to make a road-trip of it. The work part was just a few days but we booked 2 weeks, hired a car and hit the road in the state of Bahia… starting off in Ilheus and ending up in the capital, Salvador de Bahia. This experience was, in a word, life-changing. Well technically, that was two words… and it all sounds really dramatic, like I´m not the same person I was before I left, but I feel like we learnt so much and…

travel photography tavira algarve

Tavira | Algarve

Tavira is another little gem in the Algarve region that, while it´s still a lot more touristy than the Ilha do Farol, it certainly isn´t over-run with the drunk, obnoxious type of tourist… or at least, it wasn´t when we were there (thankfully!) The whitewashed walls and splashes of colour are reminiscent of the Greek isles, although the ubiquitous patterned tiles make it unmistakably Portuguese. As with many of our explorations around Portugal, we were travelling more for work than holidays so this little town left us lots to discover next time, when we aren´t on a tight schedule…

Ilha do Farol Algarve Portugal

Ilha do Farol | Algarve

The Ilha do Farol is probably one of my favourite places in the Algarve, at least from what I´ve seen so far. This southern stretch of Portugal has unfortunately (but quite deservedly) made a bit of a reputation for itself as being cheap, trashy and full of drunk Brits on holidays… you don´t need to spend more than 5 minutes in Albufeira to know what I´m talking about. (Quick tip… don´t ever, ever go to Albufeira.) But the Ilha do Farol is none of these things… this long thin island off the coast of Olhão is only accessible by boat…
