Portugals south west wild coast, costa vicentina

Costa Vicentina – Portugal´s south west coast.

So it seems everyone in the Northern Hemisphere is getting ready for autumn, my Instagram and Pinterest feeds are suddenly full of various pumpkin related recipes and warm woolly jerseys… but summer hasn´t yet left our part of the world and I, for one, am not in a rush for boots and jackets. So what if the days are getting shorter? It´s still warm enough to swim in the ocean and I´m quite happy being in denial, thank you very much. Here´s to summer, may you last at least another month… or two…

Festas da Lisboa | Lisbon Festivals

June is my favourite time of year to be in Lisbon… it´s the month in which the city dresses up and parties hard, the wine flows, the local party music drifts through the evening haze, carried along by the smoke of a hundred charcoal fires and the smell of sardines… delicious grilled sardines which, for me, is such a quintessentially Portuguese thing I don´t think I´d even be able to associate them with any other country. The city of Lisbon is essentially like a bunch of small villages crammed together… there are residential areas tucked away in the middle of…

Cabo Espichel

Aaaand we´ve reached that time of year again where the blog posts become few and far between… It´s been a while since I´ve published anything, but I do have things to share… just not enough time to select and edit and prepare blog posts. We went to the north coast of Spain, which was rainy but beautiful. We spent loads of time in the capital photographing the Lisbon Festivals, an annual summer-time celebration that takes over the entire city for the month. And I´m also working on an ongoing project centred around our local farmers market (you guys should know…

Beach love – São Julião

São Julião is our favourite beach in Ericeira, especially when you time it right and the tide is all the way out… it goes for miles and is almost always empty. Pure bliss. If you follow me on Instagram you would have seen these already… they´re iPhone photos and edited with vsco cam.

Dia da Espiga

“Dia da Espiga” (roughly translated to Day of the Wheat) is a Portuguese tradition dating back centuries and is believed to have originated from an ancient Pagan ritual. In some parts of the country this day is declared a holiday and the tradition is to go for a morning walk in the countryside to pick a variety of wildflowers, various grains (wheat, oats etc) and olive branches to form a bouquet which you then hang behind your front door and should only be replaced the following year by a fresh bouquet. The various plants in the bouquet all have different…

Azulejos Lisbon Portugal

Azulejos

A long-time obsession of mine, photographing the amazing tiles in Portugal, has had new life breathed into it by having a camera on my phone. Documenting these everyday things that pass you by becomes so much easier when you have a camera with you in every situation. Yay for technology! These images were taken with my iPhone and edited with vscocam… follow me on Instagram for other obsessions, such as clouds and freshly squeezed orange juice, and my dog…

Polaroiding in Lisbon

Last weekend we spent a photographic afternoon in Lisbon with Rui and Cristiana from Love is my Favorite Color. Rui (like most guys I know) is all about the gadgets, and since he’s a photographer, he’s all about the photo gadgets… and one of his newest toys is an old-school Polaroid camera that he brought along to play with. I hadn’t shot Polaroids for years, and never on anything as old as this camera, but it was really great to mess around with something different for a change… the finality of having a print in your hand straight away is…

Instagramming

So I’m probably one of the last people in the whole world to get into Instagram, but here I am, finally. I resisted getting an iPhone for ages because I didn’t want to become one of “those” people… you know, the ones who are permanently glued to their phones and get that funny twitch everytime the email or facebook “pings” with a notification… but in the end I had to do it, the world moves forward, with or without me and it definitely makes my work life a whole lot easier to manage. But my favourite part is having a…
